Why We Started True Care Transitions

By Rick Reeder, Co-Founder of True Care Transitions

About three years ago, my wife’s parents began losing their independence. My mother-
in-law was falling more frequently, and my father-in-law’s health had declined to the
point where he could no longer help her. After a weekend that included three
emergency calls to 911, even the firefighters gently told us it was time to get more help.

Like so many families, we turned to Google, searching desperately for the right assisted
living community, somewhere safe, comfortable, and supportive. We thought we’d found
the perfect fit and began the challenging process of downsizing, from their large home
in Colorado to a smaller one in Georgetown, and finally into a two-bedroom apartment.
We sorted through decades of cherished belongings, sold what we could, gave away
keepsakes, and stored the rest. Three years later, those storage units are still lingering
as an emotional and financial reminder of just how difficult these transitions can be.

Unfortunately, the community we chose didn’t work out. Leadership changed, staff
turnover was constant, and the amenities they had promised slowly disappeared after a
lightning strike damaged their fire system. We started the search all over again.
Eventually, we found a better place, only to face a new challenge: my mother-in-law
became seriously ill and spent weeks in the hospital and a skilled nursing facility. When
her Medicare coverage ended, we learned she couldn’t return to the assisted living
community. They weren’t licensed to care for someone with her level of medical needs.
That’s when we discovered, too late, that there are two types of assisted living
facilities (Type A and Type B), and understanding that distinction can make all the
difference.

Each move brought new stress, new expenses, and countless hours of research and
coordination. Beyond housing, there were legal documents, financial planning
decisions, move logistics, and preparations to sell their home, tasks that were time-consuming,
confusing, and emotionally draining.

It took a toll on every member of our family. And through it all, one thought kept coming
back to us: There has to be a better way.

That experience is what led me to help start True Care Transitions. We built this
company to ensure that no family has to go through what we did. Our goal is to provide
a single, trustworthy resource that connects families with Austin’s most respected
professionals in senior care, legal services, real estate, downsizing, and move
management.

With just one call, you’ll have access to a coordinated team of experts who know the
process, understand the challenges, and genuinely care about helping you find the right
solution, at no cost to you.

Because every family deserves the guidance, clarity, and compassion that make all the
difference during life’s biggest transitions.
